Frida Kahlo & Her lovers

At the dawn of the 20th Century, sexual liberation spread all around the world, and in every country, it was embodied by unique women like Virginia Woolf in England, Anaïs Nin in France, and Frida Kahlo in Mexico.

Frida Kahlo, whose real name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo, was born on July 6th in 1907, in the beautiful and famous Blue House, in Coyoacán, Mexico City. Despite she has been considered as a referent of feminism, sexual freedom, physical disability and Mexican tradition, the suffering she experienced throughout her life is unknown for many: due to the train accident that left her invalid, she usually experienced a deep depression and felt life really intensely.

Frida was a pioneer, authentic and faithful to herself. She didn’t blend into the mainstream culture, and her unique beauty and femininity turned her into an icon that still stands strong today. She was influenced by the Mexican revolutionary nationalism and wore long skirts, braids, colorful ribbons and pre-Columbian jewelry.

Frida Kahlo had several lovers throughout her life, men and women, while single and married to Diego Rivera, who had many adventures as well. Below you will find the list of her most famous lovers.

Tina Modotti, the Italian-American photographer, met Frida in 1928, and it is said they became very good friends and lover.

Leo Eloesser, Frida’s dear doctor, friend and lover, who was introduced to her by Diego. He was a very important presence in her life.

León Trotsky, one of the fundamental pieces of the Russian Revolution, escaped from Rusia and asked for asylum in Mexico. Diego Rivera interceded for him before the president Lazaro Cardenas, and Trotsky stayed at Diego and Frida’s home. He and Frida fell in love, and Diego was furious when he learned about it. Their affaire ended when Trotsky was killed in 1940.

Jaqueline Lamba was André Breton’s wife, and both stayed at Frida & Diego’s home when escaping from Nazi occupation in France. Jacqueline and Frida became friends and lovers.

Chavela Vargas, the legendary Mexican Singer, and Frida started an intense affaire when she lived at Frida & Diego’s house in Coyoacan. They remained to be friends all their lives.

Nickolas Muray was a famous photographer and Frida’s lover for many years. He always hoped Frida divorced Diego, to go and live in Mexico with her.

Diego Rivera was her only husband and life partner, until her death in 1954, when she was 47 years old. Nowadays, Frida’s work is auctioned all around the world and for millions of dollars, and she has become one of the most unique painters in history.
